A
wheel gear always accompanies these gears. Worm gearing is another
method of driving two shafts the axes of which normally lie at right
angles to each other. The usual driving member, the worm, may have
either a single or multi-start thread.
A worm drive
has many uses such as, a reducing gear unit between a high-speed
motor and a line shaft, the indexing mechanism on a number of machine
tools, and in the rear drive of a motorcar.
