Spur
gears are those that have the teeth cut parallel to the axis of
the shaft. A cross section of the tooth is identical for both size
and shape along the entire length.
Spur gearing
is used over a wide range of applications from small watches and
meters, gear trains on machine tools, in gear boxes as fitted to
motorcars and aero-engines, to large drives as found in rolling
mills and on board a ship.
